A family celebration in Stockton, California, turned into a devastating tragedy on Saturday evening when a mass shooting erupted inside a banquet hall, leaving four people dead and ten others wounded, according to local officials.

The heartbreaking incident is yet another reminder of how everyday gathering places — from schools and supermarkets to nightlife venues — continue to be disrupted by gun violence in the United States.

A Family Celebration Turns Deadly

The shooting happened just before 6 p.m. in a banquet hall located in the northern part of Stockton. The venue sits in a shared plaza alongside several businesses, including a Dairy Queen. According to Heather Brent, spokesperson for the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, both children and adults were among the victims.

Authorities have not yet released updates on the conditions of those hospitalized.

Early evidence suggests the shooting may not have been random. “Initial signs point to this being a targeted incident,” Brent said during an evening press briefing, stressing that the investigation is still in its early stages and that information remains limited.

Suspect Still at Large

The shooter fled the scene immediately after the attack and is still at large, prompting officials to urge the public to come forward with any information that could help identify the suspect.

Investigators are considering all possible motives as they work to piece together what happened and why. The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.

A Violence Trend That Continues Across the Country

Stockton’s tragedy adds to a sobering national pattern. According to the Gun Violence Archive, the U.S. has already experienced at least 380 mass shootings this year, defined as incidents where four or more people are shot (excluding the shooter).

Recent incidents include:

  • January: A shooting inside Martin’s Super Market in Elkhart, Indiana, killing two and injuring police officers.
  • August: A gunman entered a Park Avenue skyscraper lobby in New York City, killed an officer, and fired at bystanders.
  • September: A shooting at Evergreen High School in Colorado critically wounded two students.

These events continue to highlight the growing impact of gun violence in everyday American life.

State and Local Leaders Respond

California Governor Gavin Newsom was quickly briefed on the violence. Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi confirmed that the governor has offered full state support to assist local authorities and the community.

“Tonight our city is facing a heartbreaking and painful situation,” Mayor Fugazi said in a statement. “Please keep the victims, their loved ones, and our first responders in your prayers.”
