Lakeith Stanfield made his acting debut in the short film Short Term 12, which won the Jury Award for U.S. Short Filmmaking at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
In the following years, he continued to appear in short films like Gimme Grace and reappeared in the feature-length adaptation of Short Term 12.
This was his first feature that again won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Feature at the 2013 South by Southwest film festival.
He was cast as civil rights activist Jimmie Lee Jackson in The Purge: Anarchy. Later, he appeared in the films Memoria, Miles Ahead, and the horror thriller film King Ripple.
He was also seen in the music video for the Run the Jewels song “Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)”. He portrayed rapper Snoop Dogg in his biopic titled Straight Outta Compton.
He gained worldwide recognition when featured in the Netflix film Death Note and the romantic comedy film Someone Great.
His portrayal of FBI informant William O’Neal in Judas and the Black Messiah garnered him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He is working on his debut album, titled Self Control with under the stage name Htiekal.
