Prior to acting, Sam J Jones served in the United States Marine Corps, where he played football and developed a powerful physique that further helped him in acting.
After his military service, he did various odd jobs and in the late 1970s launched a successful modeling career in the late 1970s.
His appearance in ad campaigns gave him exposure that kicked off his acting career. He made his acting debut with the film 10, which led to his major breakthrough in the science-fiction adventure Flash Gordon, featured alongside Kurt Russell and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
It became a commercial hit and gave him wider exposure worldwide. From 1981-1982, he was cast as Chris Rorchek in the TV series Code Red. Meanwhile, he also guest-starred in other TV shows, including The A-Team, Hunter, and Riptide.
Later, he landed the lead role in The Spirit and also in the short-lived NBC sci-fi series The Highwayman. He was featured in the theatrical release of My Chauffeur and also in the straight-to-video movie Jungle Heat (1985).
