Yeonmi Park was born in Hyesan, Ryanggang, North Korea. She is the daughter of Park Jin-Sik who was a civil servant and worked at the Hyesan town hall whereas her mother Byeon Keum-sook was a housewife.
She grew up with her older sister, Eun-mi. As his father smuggled goods from China, he went to jail very often hence the family escaped to China when Yeonmi Park was 13 years old.
Later they reached South Korea through Mongolia. In 2009, the family was provided with the South Korean Citizenship.
Due to her struggle with moving from country to country, her studies got disturbed yet she had completed her high school equivalency in 18 months.
She went to Dongguk University in Seoul for her graduation. Later, she attended Columbia University School of General Studies to major in Economics.

Yeonmi Park a North Korean refugee is a young and renowned human-rights activist who has become a leading voice of oppressed people around the world.
In 2014, she came to prominence when her article North Korea’s “Black Market Generation” was published in the Washington Post.
Her memoir titled “In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl’s Journey to Freedom” was released in 20 languages and 18 countries.
